2012 – The Mayan Perspective

Nobody knows what hour of the day that the world as we currently know it will eventually come to an end. One sure thing is that the end will come some day: just look at what happened to the dinosaurs….

Over the last couple of decades, the 2012 Apocalypse has been a hotbed of discussion among scholars, scientists, and layman all over the globe. The keen interest in this topic isn’t surprising – it directly effects the future of all mankind!

The Apocalypse in 2012 has been cited in many prophecies; both in science and in religion.

apocalypse - 2012

Each organization has compelling evidence pointing to a potential apocalyptic or transformational phenomenon due to take place near the end of 2012. So, who’s really telling the truth?

  • Will a natural phenomenon cause the end of days in 2012?
  • Is it merely a cleansing to begin a planetary healing to clean up the damage we’ve done over the last half-million years of our known existence?
  • What are the signs that we should we be looking for?
  • Is Armageddon the war that will end all wars?
  • Are the conspiracy theories surrounding the 2012 phenomenon true: a global entity comprised of the world’s elite, who decide when and how we’ll meet our end?

All of these questions might be answered starting in a just few short weeks.

Everything surrounding 2012 and it’s implications started with the Mayan Calendar…

The Mayan Calendar

The Mayans believed their calender to be a sacred, religious document, containing a linear series of events. Pascal Voltan, a great ancient Mayan King, was well known for his knowledge of mathematics, numerology, and for being a prophet. He was originally the man who first claimed that the world would end on the 21st of December 2012.

The grand evolutionary cycle of the Mayan Long Count Calendar will end on the 21st of December, 2012: the conclusion of a unit of time known as a b’ak’tun.

For those of you who’re interested, here’s a description of a b’ak’tun as it relates to the Long Count Calendar in this quote from Wikipedia:

Unlike the 52-year Calendar Round still used today among the Maya, the Long Count was linear rather than cyclical, and kept time roughly in units of 20: 20 days made a uinal, 18 uinals (360 days) made a tun, 20 tuns made a k’atun, and 20 k’atuns (144,000 days or roughly 394 years) made up a b’ak’tun. Thus, the Mayan date of represents 8 b’ak’tuns, 3 k’atuns, 2 tuns, 10 uinals and 15 days, and is named “2-Men, God 8 of the Night, 13-Pax.”

Here are some of the labels that have been given to 2012 in modern times:

  1. Armageddon
  2. The Apocalypse
  3. The Shift of the Ages
  4. The End Times
  5. End of Days
  6. The Quickening
  7. The End of Creation
  8. The Time of Great Purification
  9. Judgement Day
  10. The Time of Trial and Tribulation on Earth

The Regeneration of Mother Earth

It has long been predicted that the Mayan Calendar’s completion will bring about a regeneration of the earth; providing a wakening to everyone with open hearts and minds. What’s most interesting about this particular spin on the theory, is that native tribes from all over the world believe it:

  • Aborigines, Dogon Tribe, Iroquois Confederacy, Apache, Cherokee, Navajo, Peruvians, Qero elders, Essenes, Kabbalists, Egyptians, Hopis and of course the Mayans believe in the 2012 Apocalyptic Cycle.

As stargazers, Mayans were very familiar with the astrological cycle known as the Precession of the Equinoxes. This sequence is a nearly 26,000-year cycle in which earth passes through every sign of the zodiac. These ages of astrology represent 1 month of the Cosmic Year (http//:answers.com definition: The period of rotation of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is approximately 220 million years.)

Cotterell & Gilbert’s Sunspot Cycle Theory

Mayan Prophecies by Adrian GilbertIn their book entitled The Mayan Prophecies, Maurice Cotterell and Adrian Gilbert claim that the Great Cycle’s end is the peak of a series of long sunspot cycles that will interrupt the magnetic field of the sun and cause that field to ‘twist’, which by consequence will affect the earth’s magnetic field, causing flooding, earthquakes, and other natural disasters to happen throughout different parts of the world.

Answers in the Stars…

Part of the great 2012 enigma stems from reading the stars:

Milky wayAccording to Lawrence Joseph, in the 2012 winter solstice, the sun will align with the Milky Way’s core for the very first time in 26,000 years. This implies that the energy which usually streams to earth from the center of the Milky Way will be interrupted on December 12, 2012 at exactly 11:11 pm.

On the other hand, many scientists believe that solar, magnetic, and gravitational energies will go wonky when the planetary and galactic alignment occurs; causing natural catastrophes, including the deterioration of the earth’s magnetic field (see related post), which will allow solar radiation to penetrate our atmosphere. This is said to be the start of the 2012 Apocalypse.

It’s out of our hands…

The 21st of December is fast approaching. All we can do is wait and see what will happen. No matter how accurate the Mayan or modern scientists’ predictions are: our beginning and our end is in the hands of something more powerful than we are, whether it be in the form of an almighty entity, or be simply the powers of the universe which are still mostly unknown to the mere mortals who inhabit this planet.
